Job Responsibilities and Requirements: Sorts, weighs, and determines means of mail delivery for outgoing mail and packages; assigns required charges for and meters U.S. mail; throws, presorts, bundles, labels, and trays mail by zip code in order to prepare mail for U.S. mail pick-up or drop. Operates, maintains, and monitors postage metering machines in the metering of first and third class U.S. mail; completes postal forms for residual U.S. mail and delivers the form with the residual and presorted mail. Monitors the collection and delivery of packages by United Parcel Service and other private mail carriers and informs appropriate County departments of relevant deliveries. May assist in the mechanical adjustment of postal equipment; may be responsible for the pick-up and delivery of registered and certified mail for the County; may assist in training new staff members. Experience: One year of experience in general clerical work. Knowledge of: The operation and maintenance of office equipment associated with postal work; rules, regulations, and procedures pertaining to the U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service, and other private mail services. Ability to: Sort mail quickly and accurately by zip code and by County department; handle and account for mail, valuable property, and documents; lift, move, and carry heavy mail trays and packages; stand or walk for long periods of time; learn the County Messenger Service policies and procedures; perform basic arithmetic computations; keep simple records; establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public and employees; follow oral and written directions.
