Job Responsibilities and Requirements: Provides personal Attendant services; assists students to move from one location to the next; assists with the loading and unloading of students on buses; directs and assists students in good health and personal hygiene activities; observes, evaluates and records behavior issues; occasionally dispenses medication to students as prescribed by physicians; provides emergency Medical and first aid care as necessary; and implements behavior plan and monitors progress. Assists in instructing students in academic, functional, and life skills subjects and other activities designed to provide learning experiences; assists in Planning lesson outlines in assigned areas; assists in developing and preparing various instructional materials considering factors such as students individual needs, abilities, learning levels and physical limitations; prepares classroom and audio-visual equipment for use; arranges and adjusts tools, work aids and equipment such as specially-equipped work tables, typewriters, and musical instruments. Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments; presents or reinforces learning concepts; prepares, administers and grades examinations and homework assignments; observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the classroom Teacher; confers with classroom Teacher on progress of student; maintains student and attendance records and other related documentation; orders supplies and equipment; maintains classroom bulletin boards; distributes and collects Teaching materials; assists in maintaining student discipline and order on the playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, library, Pool area and classrooms; operates standard Office equipment. Employment Standards Education/Experience: Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: 1. Education: Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units, from an accredited college or university, in child development, education, special education, or related field; AND 2. Experience: One (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the class, such as student instructional activities or personal guidance of students within an organized program; OR 3. Education: A high school diploma; AND 4. Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Teacher Aide or in providing responsible Attendant services or respite care to severely handicapped individuals. Teacher Assistant/SMPBC For applicants applying for Special Education (SMPBC) Teacher Assistant positions, the following qualifications are desirable: Fifteen (15) hours of classroom work and class observation plus additional qualifications as follows: Must take 12 classroom hours of trainings (you may choose which electives you wish to take as long as you take 12 hours of training); 3 hours in-class observation by PC or BCBA, or Assistant BA; must meet requirement for Highly Qualified and other WCSD requirements for SMPC position (AA equivalent). Applicants hired by the District after January 8, 2002, to work at a Title I designated school, must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an Associate degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460. Employees hired by the District prior to January 9, 2002, must meet the above requirements by June 30, 2006. Knowledge of: Education principles and techniques; students physical, emotional and academic requirements, habits and characteristics; training in behavior analysis including behavior Management and Teaching techniques, data collection and ABA basic principles; CPR and the Heimlich maneuver; common Office equipment and its usage; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics; current Office methods and procedures, including files and records Management. Skill at: Instructing students in a variety of academic and self care Management skills areas; providing personalized Attendant care; preparing realistic lesson plans and Teaching aids; securing and maintaining the confidence and cooperation of students; recognizing and dealing effectively with severely behaviorally challenged students various behavioral emergencies; working effectively in stressful situations; dealing tactfully with parents and school personnel; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action; typing with speed and accuracy; spelling correctly; reading, Writing and speaking English at a level required for successful job performance; preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records, files and summaries; developing instructional materials; making mathematical computations; operating various Office equipment; operating and maintaining specialized equipment; lifting and carrying heavy people or objects; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
